We are looking for teachers to give lectures or coordinate workshops at Cudgel War! If you are interested, please contact the event steward (see the event announcement).
The Canton of Humalasalo invites all artisans and scholars to show their skills and knowledge in the Cudgel War arts and sciences competition.
The competition will open on Friday 29th July at noon (12:00) and close on Saturday 30th July at 2 p.m. (14:00). You can participate by simply bringing your work to the jury before the closing time. If you would like to participate with an object (i.e. not performing arts), you can send it to the competition (along with your documentation, of course) also with somebody else.
The participating work can be anything, but it must include written documentation. All works will be judged within the one category "everything", unless the amount of participating works is very high.
The agreed-on classes and workshops will be listed here, as soon as we get confirmations from teachers. The (possible) descriptions of various lectures and workshops follow below.
All lectures and workshops are held in Finnish (unless noted otherwise). However, all teachers do also speak English, so questions can be asked in English as well.
This lecture explores the history of the veil (ca. 1200-1500). We'll discuss different styles and ways to wear veils as well as some social meanings given to veils during the middle ages. Who should wear veils? How to? When did it go out of style?
The lecturer is Baroness Helena von Eltz, a 14th century enthusiast with years of experience in hiding modern hairstyles under veils. (You can contact her by email, elina (at) elinasojonen.net)
This lecture teaches the basics on how to hand sew your clothes. We'll get acquainted with the most common stitches found in medieval archaeological material, what materials are recommendable and which stitches are best suited for which purpose. There will also be a small workshop where everyone can try out their new skills in hand sewing.
The lecturer is Baroness Helena von Eltz, a 14th century enthusiast and costuming geek who loves hand sewing. (You can contact her by email, elina (at) elinasojonen.net)
This lecture is cancelled.
Do you have an unfinished sewing or costuming project? You would have time for sewing at Cudgel War, but no sewing machine? No problem! At Cudgel War there will be a workshop where you will have access to a sewing machine, an iron, tablet-weaving tools, and embroidery accessories. There will also be many crafts-related books for your reading pleasure.
The workshop, which is located in the dining hall building, will be open every day. The workshop is organised by Magistra Johanna aff Hucka.
In this workshop you will learn how to make footwear using felting technique. The workshop will be open daily as desired - ask Lady Jolanda or Frú Signý (photos on the attic door and on the notice board) for assistance. Weather permitting, the workshop will be held outside by the beach, or else in the sauna building. Accessories and instructions will be available in the sauna building's sitting room.
You will need to acquire your own felting wool. The amount needed is approximately 200 grams. We will provide pattern fabric and other necessary accessories and tools.
If you are coming from abroad and cannot bring your own wool, please sign up by 1st July via e-mail to Lady Jolanda (jolanda83@jippii.fi) and tell what size and colour footwear you would like to make. We will buy the wool for you and you can pay on site. Please note that this signup is binding after 1st July.
We make a short walking trip around the campsite area. During the walk, we get acquainted with natural plants and herbs we find along our path. We discuss the use of herbs in medieval times, as well as some herb-related beliefs found in modern and medieval folklore. Also welcome input are the experiences and stories of those of you who already have gained some experience in using herbs. Herbal expertise is provided by Mistress Tófa.
The lecture deals with various findings and other sources of information about clothing that was used in Finland during the Renaissance period. We go through the different types of dresses and suits found and explore possible ways of patterning them. Tailoring expertise is provided by Mistress Tófa.
This lecture is held in English. Lecturer is Anna de Byxe.
The shoe class is a theoretical one. I will give a brief overview of various shoe styles that were worn during different time periods. Then I will show how to make a pair of turn shoes. Class usually takes about 2 hours. Upper limit 10 people.
This workshop is held in English. Instructor is Anna de Byxe. Note that dinner will be reserved for those who have paid for it even if (and when) the workshop continues over the official dinner time.
The illumination workshop is hands-on and it takes about 4 hours. It is for people who haven't lifted a brush since their school days. Everyone gets to learn the basics of illumination by painting an Initial. Upper limit 6 people. I will bring the required materials (at a cost of 2 euros per person), but if somebody wants to bring their own materials that's okay too. (The colors should be gouache colors.)
In Cudgel War there is once again the possibility to make scrolls and learn calligraphy. The teacher will be present almost every day at least for a while (more accurate schedule will be set at the campsite). You will need only time and patience with you, at the very minimum, but if you happen to already have some calligraphy and illumination equipment, you can of course bring them too. We will provide mostly paper and a few pens, as well as illumination gear for a couple of persons. Your own paper and paints (acid-free, sturdy paper, e.g. watercolour paper and e.g. gouache or watercolours), brushes, as well as pens and nibs are heartily welcomed.
