Arts and Sciences Competition

The canton of Humalasalo invites Aarnimetsä and all of Known World to show their skills and knowledge at the A&S competition at Cudgel War. You can participate in the competition in any kind of an item or performance that relates to our period.

The competition opens on Friday, July 20, at 10a.m. and closes on Saturday, July 21 at 2 p.m. To participate, you have to bring your item to Cudgel War by 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 28 [but you are strongly encouraged to bring it out already on Friday]. The exact spot to show the competing items is announced at Cudgel War. More information from Aarnimetsä Minister of Arts and Sciences, moas @ aarnimetsa . org.

Your item can be anything within our period, but it has to be documented in writing. The documentation has to be written in either Finnish or English. If Finnish is the original language, main documentation has to be translated into English as some of the judges may not read Finnish (translation and proof reading help may be available, if you contact MoAS early enough). If there's a limited number of participants, all entrants will be judged in the same category.

Arts and Sciences Display

An Arts and Sciences Display will be arranged at Cudgel War. The display is for everyone who have unfinished or finished projects to show. You may participate in the display also without documentation. Viewers can bring their personal tokens or small gifts (beads, ribbons, coins, bags etc.) to lay beside the A&S display projects. Remember that this is not a competition and you are not voting for the best piece. Your token or gift is for the artist to know that his or hers project was admired! There will be also forms where viewers can write their comments about the display items. The exact spot to show your display items is announced at Cudgel War. Display opens on Saturday, July 14 and closes on Saturday, July 21. You can show your projects the whole week if you want or just some hours or days during Cudgel War. It would be desirable that those with items at display come to talk about their items at display hall on Wednesday, July 18 at 11-11.30 and/or Saturday, July 21, at 11-11.30. All spectators are of course invited to profit from this rare chance to talk with the artisans. More information from Aarnimetsä Minister of Arts and Sciences, moas @ aarnimetsa . org.

Textile workshop

The crafts workshop at Cudgel War is smaller than usual due to transport problems, but it will be arranged, albeit only as textile workshop.

At the workshop you have at your disposal at least an iron and ironing board, sewing accessories and thread for handsewing and a wide variety of materials and tools for braids, cords and embroidery. We cannot promise clothing materials nor sewing machine, but basic patterns for medieval dresses will be brought to the workshop so you if you bring fabric, the pieces can at least be drawn and cut out.

For the same reasons the workshop librarly will concentrate on sewing, embroidery, braids and cords. The main part of the library will consist of introductory and basic books on the core matters, but if you are interested in a specific field (for example brocaded tablet weaving), you can ask in advance to get litterature about that specific subject.

The textile workshop is freely available from Sunday afternoon to next Saturday morning and during that time you can come in any time to browse the books or to work on your projects. If you use workshop materials for your own projects, you'll be asked to reimbursed for that; however, if you donate your craft to the barony or to the kingdom, you don't have to pay anything.

There'll also be small hands-on sessions at the workshop on tabletweaving (basics, brocade, double-turn double-face), embroidery (bayeux-stitch, blackwork, basics in general), braiding and lucet (basics and variations).

The preliminary plan is to arrange the teaching sessions so that every day has a different theme. The basics are taught in the morning after breakfast and then we'll continue towards more advanced techniques in the afternoon. The schedule will be announced closer to the date, but if you are interested in something specific and/or want to learn it on a specific date, contact the workshop steward!

At the workshop you can also get help with making own basic medieval garb out of your own fabrics. Turn up at the workshop whenever you want to or agree on a time in advance. Also, if you are not around when a certain theme is brought up at hands-on sessions, you can always ask for instruction at any other time when the instructor is available - we can agree on a suitable time (like after dinner on a certain day) even on the camp!

The workshop can be found at class room. It is arrange by Johanna aff Hucka and all suggestions, questions etc. should be sent to johanna . aff . hucka (at) iki . fi
